چکیده

Dark Energy is currently one of the biggest mysteries in science. In this article the origin of the concept is traced as far back as Newton and Hooke in the seventeenth century. Newton considered, along with the inverse square law, a force of attraction that varies linearly with distance. A direct link can be made between this term and Einstein’s cosmological constant, Λ , and this leads to a possible relation between Λ and the total mass of the universe. Mach’s influence on Einstein is discussed and the convoluted history of Λ throughout the last ninety years is coherently presented.

Generalized Galilean algebras and Newtonian gravity

Article history: Received 18 October 2015 Received in revised form 25 January 2016 Accepted 17 February 2016 Available online 23 February 2016 Editor: M. Cvetič The non-relativistic versions of the generalized Poincaré algebras and generalized AdS-Lorentz algebras are obtained. These non-relativistic algebras are called, generalized Galilean algebras of type I and type II and denoted by GBn and...

Artifact Dark Matter from Unified Brane Gravity

Adopting Dirac’s brane variation prescription, the energy-momentum tensor of a brane gets supplemented by a geometrical (embedding originated) dark component. While the masslessness of the graviton is preserved, and the Newton force law is recovered, the corresponding Newton constant is necessarily lower than the one which governs FRW cosmology. This has the potential to puzzle out cosmological...

Alternatives to Dark Matter and Dark Energy

We review the underpinnings of the standard Newton-Einstein theory of gravity, and identifywhere it could possibly go wrong. In particular, we discuss the logical independence from eachother of the general covariance principle, the equivalence principle and the Einstein equations, anddiscuss how to constrain the matter energy-momentum tensor which serves as the source of gravity.<lb...

Dark Energy as Evidence for Extra Dimensions

It is argued that fluctuations of quantum fields in four-dimensional space do not give rise to dark energy, but are rather a negligible contribution to dark matter. By (relativistic) dark matter we mean that the relation between pressure and energy density is p = 1 3 u, while dark energy is characterized by p = −u. A possible source of dark energy are the fluctuations in quantum fields, includi...

Dark matter and non-Newtonian gravity from General Relativity on a stringy background

An exact solution of Einstein’s field equations for a static spherically symmetric medium with a radially boost invariant energy-momentum tensor is presented. In the limit of an equation of state corresponding to a distribution of radially directed strings there is a 1/r correction to Newton’s force law. At large distances and small accelerations this law coincides with the phenomenological for...
